A walk to make me remember

One of the two birthday parties Griffin was invited to on Saturday was at my old high school, at the planetarium.

My first thought, my high school had a planetarium?

My second thought, I haven't been to Mitchell since May of 1987.

As I drove down the small street that connects the high school with the main road I explained to the boys, this was a 7/11, this was a radio station, this was a movie theatre, that was the pizza place.

Griffin found it hard to wrap his head around the fact that I once went to high school. Hayden didn't show much interest in my trip down memory lane, or San Miguel Drive.

When we arrived at the school I checked and yes, the Mitchell Marauder sign donated by the class of 1987 was still there. We found the hostess and were invited to stay and see the presentation.

We walked past the office, school store, auditorium, lunchroom / dance floor, library, all the lockers. We passed the typing room, it must be the computer lab now. The DECA club room. My old math class.

The lockers where I punched that guy Ron for grabbing my tatas.

The courtyard where you could smoke between classes or during lunch.

The English room that one teacher used, rumor was she had booze in the coffee cup.

And we found the planetarium, ah yes, now I remember. I think I was actually here once or twice.

It was a very interesting day, it brought back lots of memories. Made me realize I am lucky I can go visit my old haunts if I am feeling the need.

I always thought Babylon, NY was my hometown. We moved here from there when I was 10. To be more accurate I live in my hometown, the town I grew up in. After all I have been here for 3/4 of my life.

And can you believe kids were allowed to smoke at school!

Isn't it funny going back to former schools? Things look the same, but still different. I cannot believe that students could smoke on campus! That was a major battle in my school...people would sneak off in the weirdest places to smoke...I never really understood that, but I am not a smoker.

Gosh, can kids still smoke at school? I graduated high school in 1986 and went back a few years ago for my 20th reunion. Everything seemed so much smaller than I remembered. There was also a bunch of new stuff in the tiny school so everything seemed a lot shinier too. Lots of fond memories there, but none I want to relive!

It must have so cool going back to your old school!

And I forgot that there was a time when kids and/or teachers were actually allowed to smoke on school property. Even harder to imagine is that people used to be able to smoke on an airplane! My how times have changed.

What a blast from the past eh?

So funny that Griffin can't get his head around the fact you once went to highschool.

Our kids just think we're ancient right?

Yeah, I remember when kids would smoke at my middle school - no lie! I mean I don't think they were really supposed to but they found a spot!

Glad you had a little trip down memory lane... it's always good to find those memories again.

If I ever end up in my hometown again (it's so expensive to fly the family anywhere anymore!), I really want to go back to my highschool and cruise the grounds. I wonder what random memories it would dislodge, since highschool seems like such a blur (though I think it's my brain that's the blur).
