Independence day has come early

Carter's bike has had a flat tire since last fall. He didn't seem to care about getting it fixed. He would ride his brother's bike or his scooter.

The tire was fixed on Monday.

His friend rode his bike over on Tuesday. The two of them rode 2.5 miles back to the friend's house for a sleepover.

"Call me when you get there," I say as I watch my baby ride off. He has his own wheels now. He has some independence.

Although at times he lacks the responsibility character trait. I call the friend's house 45 minutes later, "Did they get there? Can I talk to Carter?" I lay on the guilt trip, even though I know he just forgot to call.

This afternoon he rode home, by himself, on wet roads, got splashed, and had a ball.

He rode to the library to sign up for summer reading, decided the line was too long, checked out some books and was back 1/2 hour later.

After dinner he decided we needed ice cream for dessert. He rode to the supermarket with his backpack and his own $15 and bought 2 containers of ice cream and chocolate sauce.

He will be headed off to middle school in the fall. I know he is growing up and needs some independence. I just didn't imagine this day would come so soon.

Wasn't it just last week he was shooting green food coloring in his mouth because he thought it would be sweet and tasty? Oh yes, that was just last week.
