Too smart

Hayden was flirting it up at the grocery store yesterday. He had a free buffet of samples at the deli counter, sang songs to all the ladies, talked with the men. But the best was when we went to check out and he told the male cashier, "My mom's number is 265-_ _ _ _." And he got it right!

I noticed on nikeplus.com this morning that I was 6.33 miles away from 40 miles logged in January. It would be my best month ever and most of the miles are in the last two weeks. So I dropped Hayden at "Y school" and got running. 6.4 miles on the ipod, just over 6.75 on the treadmill. My pace is increasing, today was 10:51 with an average in January of 11:56.

Has it been ten years?

The Broncos won their first Super Bowl on January 25th, 1998. Monica Lewinsky was breaking news.
Hillary Clinton: 'This Is A Battle'

Hillary Clinton
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Jan. 27 1998) -- First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday firmly denied allegations that her husband had an affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Mrs. Clinton blamed the sex allegations on a "a vast right-wing conspiracy" against President Bill Clinton.

And of course our first of three handsome boys was born. When I tell Carter the story of his birth I am always amazed and our naivety. Carter was a scheduled c-section. We arrived at the hospital by 6am and were told that there were lots of other moms having c-sections too so it might take a while. One nurse asked me when was the last time I felt the baby kick...."hmm maybe yesterday," I reply. "Well we are just going to put this baby monitor on to track things for a while," she says. "OK" still no worries or cause for alarm for us. My sister and parents start to arrive, it may be a while we explain. Meanwhile the nurses are conferring with the doctors and "Good news," nurse says, "You get to go first!" Oh goody, first! They quickly move us into the OR and get to work.

Carter was born with meconium aspiration. As he loves to say, "I pooped in your stomach." No, we haven't had the "it wasn't really in stomach talk" yet. Ben is permanently scarred by hearing the nurse tell Carter to breathe, not breathing isn't an option, come on Carter breathe. Ben was crying as he went with a now breathing Carter to the nursery to put him on oxygen and in ICU. They never told me what his first APGAR scores were but I think since breathing is required, they must have been pretty low.

Four days in the Special Care nursery, 3 months on oxygen at home. I also have to assume his asthma is related, but there haven't been any studies.

Ten years later and I am so very happy we got to be first that day.

Lost that lovin' feeling? No way!

Every time I hear "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" I smile and think back to twenty years ago.

In college I worked in the neighborhood pizzeria, Giovanni's. This was back in the day when Giovanni's was a real pizza restaurant, before the constant 2.99 buffet. So the year is 1988 and I am working the cash register for a sports banquet. We had a lot of these for local sports tournaments. This teenage boy comes to the counter and starts to talk to me and then his friend says, "I'll take care of this," and they break out in "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." Remember the scene from Top Gun when Tom Cruise puts the moves on Kelly McGillis.

The restaurant was packed. I was beyond embarrassed. I tried to duck for cover but my co-workers wouldn't let me escape. When I think back on that day, I can't tell you what the boys looked like, or how many people stopped what they were doing to watch, but I can tell you whenever I hear that song I am 18 years old in my cute skinny jeans with a huge grin on my very red face. So where ever you guys are (and you must be almost 40 by now too) thanks for the song and I still have that lovin' feeling.

Fun and Different Events

Since my Pikes Peak Ascent goal will not be met this year, unless they change the new qualifications, I have decided to do other fun and different races.
Here is what I have planned so far:

Run the Republic, climb Denver's tallest building, climb to the 53rd floor. Proceeds benefit American Lung Assocation. www.RunTheRepublic.com

Leap Day 5K and Partay (yes, I spelled that right). An evening race in Fort Collins and party (or Partay) afterwards. Proceeds benefit Project Self-Sufficiency.

I think I am collecting racing bibs and cool event t-shirts.

Why Carter doesn't say grace

"Dear God, Thank you for this food. I hope it doesn't make me hurl."

OCD

Carter has some OCD traits. He will only eat out a ceramic (not even plastic) bowl. He says the plastic doesn't get clean. He was thrilled when he recieved a toy storage / organizational center for his third birthday.

Now Hayden has insisted when we comb his hair that it is flat all over. He will sometimes comb it himself, as long as it takes to make it flat. Nothing sticking up, nothing combed back, just flat. He is only 3.

Hayden is not a vegetable eater. He said he will never, never, never, ever eat broccoli. He also loves chicken soup, but hates when it has the green stuff (celery) or orange stuff (carrots). We found good ol Campbell's doesn't have either. Yeah for Campbell's, I am tired of straining out veggies.

Saying Grace

Usually we say grace every night. Lately Hayden has been saying it. First he makes sure everyone hands are the way he likes them, together and straight. Then he just checks if anyone has started eating. Then he proceeds. It is different every night but goes something like this, "Thank you God for teachers and brothers and parents and all our blessings. Thank you God for milk, napkins and spaghetti. Goodbye, Amen." It is very cute and it is really hard not to giggle.

My favorite was when Griffin's grace included "Thank you God for cheese sauce."

Today Hayden and I tried to run again. It was impossible, the trail was snow packed making Hayden bounce all over. So we walked.

2.63 miles in 45:05. Yes, slow but it was bumpy.

Then to redeem myself I went to the middle school track later and finally calibrated my nike + ipod system. So 1/4 mile walking and 1/4 mile running. Decided to try a 30 minute workout and did 2.77 miles.

Total for today 5.9 miles...my legs are sore.

Yeah E85

Our family of five likes to camp. We purchased a 2004 Yukon XL (the boy mover) to pull our pop up camper. We purchased the boy mover right before we started paying attention to gas prices in December 2004. We stopped on the way home from the dealership to fill up and were shocked that is was over $65.00 to fill up the beast. How were we going to afford to drive this monster?

In the next few years the price to fill up has sometimes reached $90.00. But we love camping, have 3 active boys and need (and are used to) the space our car provides.

Then an interesting happened early this past fall. Our local tv station ran a story on E85 fuel and how you may be driving a flex fuel car and not even know it. I probably just came home from filling up the beast when the story aired because I paid particulary close attention. I went to the website and looked up my car. Then I checked again. I filled up another time or two with good old fashioned high price gas. I spoke to my mechanic-savy brother in law, he said I had better be really sure because I could ruin the engine and he thought it would say "flex fuel" on my car if it truly was. So I looked up the link again and rechecked. Sure enough my car was listed. I have the right character in the Vin number.

I loaded up my environmentally conscience 4th grader for our first trip to the E85 pump. I told him what a great thing we were doing for the world to fuel up our gas hog boy mover with E85 fuel. We paid 2.19 a gallon! And we have continued to only fuel with E85. There is a slight drop in gas mileage, maybe 15-20%. But we are saving over 15-20% so it all works out.

Today I filled up the boy mover and it was only $2.09 a gallon. I was so excited to only pay $65.00 to fill it up.

New Goal

My big goal this year was to do the Pikes Peak Ascent. It is a 13.2 mile race up Barr Trail to the top of the peak. Yes, many people do this. So many in fact that the registration for it last year was full within 15 minutes. This year they have changed the registration process. To register for the second wave (the slower one) you need a 1/2 marathon time of 2:30 or less (or have done the Ascent before within a certain time). And you need that marathon time by the mid-March registration date. I am sure you have figured this out, I am in Colorado. We get snow here. They do not usually plan marathons in the winter.

I will try to train compete in a half marathon this year. Hopefully my racing bib collection will increase by at least one 1/2 marathoner with a time sub 2:30. Then I can do the Ascent next year (2009). If is scheduled for the same weekend, it will be a much bigger accomplishment for me. It will be the day before I turn 40!

Sunday run: 3.8 miles 42:55, my best non-race pace in a while. Same course as Saturday but without the passenger in the jog stroller.

I found great site to help with training for a marathon: http://www.marathontraining.com/marathon/m_mile.html

Saturday Run

Yes, I went for a run. I mostly walked. In my defense, I was pushing 39 pounds of solid boy in the jog stroller over mostly snow packed, hilly trails. It will be interesting to do this course again without my passenger to check my time. It was a great trail. I am constantly amazed at the great parks and trail systems we have in El Paso County. We are certainly blessed to have these amenities in our area.

Saturday January 12th: 3.82 miles, 52:55 with Hayden in stroller.

I love my Nike+. It is the coolest gadget. I love coming home from a run (ok, a walk...whatever) and downloading the data. It is one of the reasons I love getting out and running. I might be just a tad competitive and this lets me race against myself and others all over the world. I love Nike+.

Since I am also trying to watch what I fuel this running machine with, I have been following the WW core plan. Today was a great day, right up until the big guys went to the hockey game. Hayden decided since we were left home, we should have a treat. "Bananas?" I ask. "I want the green ice cream with the chocolate chips," he said. Good choice, I can always run again tomorrow....

Resolutions

Ok, maybe not resolutions, more like goals, calling it a resolution would be easier to blow off. 2008 will be a year for financial and physical fitness.

For the physical fitness part: I plan to start a collection of racing bibs. I earned my first on January 1st with a 5K through Palmer Park, it was 18 degrees. My second was that Saturday in Monument Valley Park.

Financial fitness: Well, my after Christmas shopping was limited to 10 cent holiday wrapping paper at Walgreens...ok, ok, I bought 17 rolls, but it was only $1.70 and now I have wrapping paper until the boys are in college.
